500 KB when the portal allows a decent photo
Some school, insurance, and mail portals allow 500 KB. That is enough for a photo that still looks like a photo on a laptop, not only a thumbnail.
Use 500 KB when 200 KB looked cheap and the form is not the 50 KB kind of hostile.
How to compress to 500 KB
- Drop the original. You rarely need to resize first unless the form also names pixels.
- Compress to 500 KB.
- Check the download at 100% if the photo matters.
- Delete the files.
500 KB is still a cap
A poster-size PNG can miss 500 KB. Convert photos to JPEG. Keep PNG for graphics.
We will not upscale a small file to 'fill' 500 KB. If the original is 80 KB, you get about 80 KB.

Is 500 KB enough for print?
500 KB on a large print is still a web file. For print, keep more pixels and a bigger file if the shop allows it.

The slider is for when you care about look first. This page is for when the form wrote 500 KB.
What happens to a Live Photo?

Can I compress a multi-page PDF?
This is images, not PDF compression. Use Images to PDF after the photos are light enough.
How large can each file be?
20 MB each, up to 10 files. Images above 32 megapixels are reduced first.
