Merge bank statement PDFs for a mortgage

Why the mortgage portal wants one PDF, not six uploads
Loan and mortgage checklists usually name a single bank-statement packet. The underwriter opens one file, flips month by month, and rejects a folder of separate downloads when the form only exposes one browse button.
Emailing a zip of months to the loan officer is not the same job. The portal that powers the application expects a PDF the same way Outlook expects an attachment you can open without unzipping.
Build the packet once, name it clearly, and keep the separate monthly downloads in a folder in case the lender asks for one month again.
List order is the page order the officer will read
On Merge PDF the stack you arrange is the stack that lands in the download. Drag January above February, or sort by name when your bank already numbered the files.
Choose pages when a download includes a cover sheet you do not want. Rotate a sideways scan before you merge so the officer is not tilting the screen for one month.
Match the checklist the lender emailed: some packs want oldest first, others want the newest month on top.
Real limits: 2 to 10 PDFs, 80 MB together, 200 pages
Drop between 2 and 10 statement PDFs. Each file can be 20 MB, and the batch must stay under 80 MB together. The merged result can hold up to 200 pages.
Password-protected statements are refused. Remove the bank password where you downloaded the file, then merge. Photos and phone screenshots belong on Images to PDF first; this page only accepts PDFs.
Merge the months, then compress only if the pack is heavy
Merging copies pages as they are. The download lands near the sum of the files you added, so six high-resolution scans can still miss an Outlook or portal cap.
When the single file is ready but still too large, shrink it on Compress PDF. That is a size step after the packet exists, not a substitute for putting the months in order. A pure email-size problem without a merge job is PDF for email.
- Drop the monthly statement PDFs on Merge PDF (2 to 10 files).
- Reorder the list so the oldest month is first, or match the checklist the lender sent.
- Use Choose pages or rotate on any file that needs it, then merge.
- If the result is still heavy for the portal or Outlook, run Compress PDF on that one file.
Author names in Properties are a different privacy job
Merging does not clear Author or XMP. If the loan packet should not show who exported each month, strip metadata on Remove PDF metadata before or after the merge, as covered in PDF metadata privacy.
Questions
Why does the mortgage portal reject separate monthly PDFs?
Many loan forms expose one upload slot for bank statements. A single merged PDF matches that checklist; a zip of months often does not.
Does the list order decide how the loan officer reads the months?
The order of files in Merge PDF becomes the page order in the download, so put January above February before you merge.
How many statement PDFs can I merge at once?
Between 2 and 10 PDFs, 20 MB each, under 80 MB together, with at most 200 pages in the result. A longer history has to be merged in parts.
The bank PDF has a password. Can I still merge it?
Password-protected PDFs are refused. Remove the password in the bank download or reader, then drop the unlocked file.
Will merging shrink the statements for Outlook?
Merging does not shrink pages. When the pack is ready but still large, use Compress PDF, or see PDF for email for email caps.
Can I drop a cover page from one monthly download?
Open Choose pages on that file and set the first and last page. Other months can keep every page.
Do I need to rotate a sideways scan before the loan upload?
Rotate that file in the merge list first so every month sits upright for the underwriter.
Does merging remove the Author field from each statement?
Merging leaves Author and XMP alone. Clearing those fields is Remove PDF metadata, described in PDF metadata privacy.
