Why Google Docs and Slides refuse an iPhone .heic
Google Docs and Google Slides run in the browser. Insert, Image, Upload from computer hands the file to a picker that allowlists common raster types. HEIC from an iPhone is usually missing from that list, so the file stays grey or the upload returns an unsupported type.
That failure is not the same as PowerPoint on Windows waiting for Store codecs. The Docs tab never installs HEIF for you. The practical fix is a JPEG (or PNG) before you open Insert.
Word without HEVC is a second, separate trap
Desktop Word on Windows shares the same codec story as other Office apps: without HEIF Image Extensions and, for most stills, HEVC, Insert Picture can refuse .heic even when Photos already opens the file.
If your workflow is a Word draft that later goes to Drive, convert once and insert the JPEG in both places. Spending time on codecs only helps the Word install on that PC; it does not teach Docs to accept HEIC.
Drive sharing does not teach Docs to decode HEIC
Uploading the .heic to Google Drive can store the file, and Preview on some accounts may show a thumbnail. Opening that file as a Docs image, or picking it from Drive inside Insert, still fails when the editor only accepts raster.
Treat Drive as storage. Convert for anything that must sit on the page, in a table, or in a Slides frame that classmates open on Chromebooks.
Convert the still, then Insert in Docs or Slides
HEIC to JPG rewrites a standard JPEG on the server with libheif. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each. Files are deleted within 1 hour. Need a transparent edge for a logo on a dark slide in Slides? Use HEIC to PNG for that one file.
- Drop the .heic on HEIC to JPG.
- Download the JPEG, or a ZIP for a batch of homework photos.
- In Docs or Slides, Insert, Image, Upload from computer and pick the .jpg.
- If Outlook or a Workday form needs the same photo outside Docs, reuse that JPEG instead of the HEIC.
PowerPoint Insert is a different Windows job
Building a .pptx on a Windows laptop, with Photo Album and codec installs, belongs on HEIC in PowerPoint. Stay here when the refusal is Google Docs, Google Slides, or Word feeding a Drive workflow.
Blank Explorer thumbnails without an editor in play are HEIC on Windows.

Why does Insert image in Google Docs reject my HEIC?
Docs uploads expect raster types the browser allowlists. An iPhone .heic is usually outside that list, so Insert fails until you convert to JPEG or PNG.
Does Google Slides accept HEIC if Docs does not?
Slides uses the same Insert image path. Convert the still first; do not expect Slides to decode HEIC when Docs refused it.
Can Word insert HEIC without converting?
On Windows, Word needs HEIF and often HEVC codecs, same as other Office apps. Without them, convert to JPEG. Codecs on one PC still do not fix Google Docs.
I uploaded the HEIC to Drive. Why is Insert still broken?
Drive can store the file without making Docs able to place it on the page. Convert to JPEG, then Insert from the computer or from Drive as a raster.
Should I use PNG instead of JPEG for Docs?
JPEG is enough for photos. Use HEIC to PNG when you need transparency for a logo or diagram on a colored background.
Will a Live Photo animate inside Google Docs?
Docs and Slides keep a still frame only. Convert that still like any HEIC, or export video from the phone if you need motion elsewhere.
Is this the same fix as PowerPoint on Windows?

Put the HEIC batch on HEIC to JPG, download the ZIP, then Insert each JPEG into the Docs file or the Slides file that lives in Drive.
