HEIC to PNG when you need a lossless-looking photo
Print shops and some editors still want PNG, not JPEG. We decode the iPhone HEIC with libheif and write PNG so you can edit without another JPEG generation. See HEIC on Windows if Windows will not open the original.
Live Photo uses the main photo. PNG will usually be larger than the JPEG from the HEIC to JPG page.
How to convert HEIC to PNG
- Drop HEIC/HEIF.
- Convert on the server.
- Download PNG.
- Delete when you have the files. Run PNG to JPG later if a form wants JPEG after all.
PNG is not smaller
People open this page hoping for a tiny file. That is HEIC to JPG plus a KB compressor.
HDR still becomes 8-bit. We do not write a 16-bit PNG from an iPhone HDR file for now.
Questions
When PNG instead of JPG?
Editors and some print shops that only take PNG. Everyday email should use HEIC to JPG.
Does transparency stay?
A photo HEIC is opaque. The PNG will be too.
What happens to a Live Photo?
Main photo only.
Will the PNG be smaller than JPEG?
Usually no. PNG is for editors and print, not for email. HEIC to JPG is the small photo.
Then strip GPS?
Remove EXIF after, or convert to JPG and strip.
Do you write 16-bit PNG from iPhone HDR?
No. HDR still becomes 8-bit for now.
