Why Explorer says the file is invalid

iPhones have saved HEIC since iOS 11. The photo is HEVC inside a HEIF container. File Explorer, the old Photo Viewer, and a lot of Word and Outlook builds never learned that codec. You get a blank thumbnail or an error that the file is not supported.

A Live Photo is that photo plus a short clip. The .heic you copied is the photo. The clip is a separate MOV that Windows also refuses unless the HEVC pack is present. Tinolia does not put that clip in the JPEG.

Install the codec packs if you only need to look

Microsoft splits HEIC into two Store listings. HEIF Image Extensions is free and teaches Windows the container. HEVC Video Extensions is the codec that actually draws the pixels. Some PCs already have a free HEVC pack named Device Manufacturer. The other listing often costs about a dollar.

Some Windows 11 Photos builds open HEIC after HEIF is installed. Explorer thumbnails, Word, and the printer driver often still do not. A codec on this PC does not travel with the file. The person you email still needs JPEG.

1. Open Microsoft Store and install HEIF Image Extensions (free).
2. Search HEVC Video Extensions. If a listing includes Device Manufacturer in the name, install that one. Otherwise the paid listing is the one that remains.
3. Close Explorer and open the folder again. Thumbnails may appear. Double-click a .heic in Photos.
4. If the Store is blocked, skip the packs. Convert instead.

When converting is the better move

Work PCs frequently block the Store. Then the pack never installs. Even when Photos opens HEIC, the HR portal, the printer, and Outlook still want JPEG.

iCloud for Windows can hand you a JPEG copy while the original stays HEIC in the cloud. That helps this PC. It does not help a form that already has the .heic attached. HEIC to JPG writes a JPEG you can send.

Convert the photo on Tinolia

Re-encoding to JPEG usually drops GPS. That is a side effect, not a promise. Use Remove EXIF if a listing or a CV must be clean. See strip GPS.

1. Drop .heic or .heif from Files, Photos, or a USB copy of the iPhone DCIM folder. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
2. Download JPEG, or a ZIP of several. Delete when you have the files.
3. If the form also names a size, run Compress to 100 KB on the JPEG next. Need PNG for an editor, use HEIC to PNG. Several photos into one PDF is HEIC to PDF.

Stop saving new shots as HEIC

The Formats toggle is iPhone JPEG. New shots can write JPEG. Photos already on the roll stay HEIC until you convert them.

Mac already opens HEIC. If the next person is on Android, see HEIC on Android. If they are on Windows, send JPEG.
