Why Explorer shows a blank thumbnail

Microsoft documents HEIF and HEVC extensions for Photos on Windows 10. A PC may already include relevant support. Follow the app's actual error and the Store system requirements; installing a codec does not guarantee that every Office version or upload field will accept HEIC.

The file itself is intact. The same .heic opens on the iPhone that shot it and on any recent Mac. Renaming it to .jpg fixes nothing, because each of those programs reads the first bytes of the file rather than the three letters on the end.

Install the two Store packages to look on this PC

Give it a minute after installing. Windows 11 Photos often picks the codec up straight away while Explorer keeps serving the empty preview it cached earlier.

1. Install HEIF Image Extension from the Microsoft Store (free).

3. Close every Explorer window and open the folder again. Thumbnails may come back.
4. Double-click a .heic to check Photos. Still nothing, or no Store at all? Convert instead.

When the Store is blocked on a work laptop

Managed laptops often have the Microsoft Store hidden by policy, or Company Portal offers a short approved list that no codec is on. The listing then never installs, and winget is usually locked down as well. A helpdesk ticket for a decoder so you can see a photo is not going to be a quick yes.

In that situation converting is the shorter path, not the fallback. The JPEG opens in Photos, in Explorer, in the Word document you are pasting into, and on whatever build the reviewer at the other end happens to run.

Word opens it, Explorer will not, and neither is broken

Support here is per application, not per PC. A current Word 365 can place a HEIC once the image extension is in. Explorer's thumbnail cache, the Insert Picture dialog in an older Office, and most printer drivers take separate code paths and give up on the same file.

So test the program that actually has to open it. A photo that previews cleanly in Photos can still come back as a grey box in a Word template, and a print shop counter is the same story again on a machine you do not control. Finding that out with the job already paid for is the expensive version.

What iCloud for Windows actually hands you

iCloud download choices can include unmodified originals or compatible versions, depending on the download interface. Check the selected option and the actual filename. A HEIC original remains HEIC; storing it in iCloud does not itself mean every download becomes JPEG.

Make a JPEG that opens on the other machine too

The decode runs on the server with libheif, not a browser demo that stalls on a file from a current iPhone. Drop the photo, take the JPEG, and the copy you attach opens on the Windows 10 box in the back office.

HEIC to JPG handles one batch. If a Workday application asks for JPEG, check its pixel dimensions and byte limit as well. Use a KB cap when that matches the form, or HEIC to PNG when it asks for PNG. Neither format guarantees the destination will accept the photo.

1. Drop .heic or .heif from Files, from Photos, or from a USB copy of the iPhone DCIM folder. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
2. Download JPEG, or a ZIP when you sent several.
3. Photos that have to arrive as one document go through HEIC to PDF, not a folder the clerk opens one file at a time.

What the JPEG carries out of the HEIC

HDR and Photographic Styles come out as a standard 8-bit JPEG, the kind any PC draws without an HDR display, so the colour can look a touch flatter than on the phone. The Live Photo clip is a separate MOV and stays behind.

Re-encoding usually drops GPS as a side effect, which is not the same as removing it on purpose. When a listing or a CV has to be clean, use Remove EXIF and read strip GPS first.

Stop the next batch from being HEIC

The Formats toggle in the camera settings is in iPhone JPEG. New shots write JPEG from then on and take more storage. Photos already on the roll stay HEIC until you convert them.

If the next person to get these is on Android, HEIC on Android has the gallery side. And when the file Windows refused arrived through a browser download rather than a phone, it is probably AVIF: AVIF on Windows.
