Windows still trips on AVIF. Convert the photo to JPEG on Tinolia when Photos, Word, or a form will not open it. Files are deleted within 1 hour.

Why Photos shows a black frame
AVIF is a still photo encoded with AV1. Chrome already likes it. File Explorer, the old Photo Viewer, Word, and a lot of HR upload fields never learned that codec. You get a black preview, a generic icon, or an error that the file is not supported.
Some Windows 11 Photos builds open AVIF after an update. Explorer thumbnails, the printer driver, and last year's Outlook often still do not. HDR AVIF is worse: Photos can stay black even when a Store pack is installed.
Install the AV1 pack if you only need to look
The free Store listing is AV1 Video Extension. It teaches Photos and Explorer to decode AVIF. Restart Explorer after it installs, then double-click a .avif.
A codec on this PC stays on this PC. The person you email still needs JPEG. Work laptops that block the Store never get the pack. Convert then.
- Open Microsoft Store and install AV1 Video Extension (free).
- Sign out or restart Explorer, then open the folder again.
- Double-click a .avif in Photos. If it is still black, especially HDR, convert.
- If the Store is blocked, skip the pack.
Chrome saved .avif even though the URL said .jpg
Right-click Save image as writes the bytes that arrived. The site saw Chrome's Accept header, noticed image/avif, and sent AVIF. The address bar can still end in .jpg. Renaming the file to .jpg does not change the inside. Word still chokes.
Edge and Brave advertise AVIF too. Safari is less aggressive. If you already have the .avif, convert it. The WebP version of this mess is Chrome WebP.
Convert the file on Tinolia
AVIF to JPG writes a standard 8-bit JPEG. HDR becomes ordinary JPEG. If the AVIF had transparency, pick a fill; JPEG has no transparency. White is the usual page. Animated AVIF is rejected.
The JPEG can be larger than the AVIF. AVIF is good at the same look in fewer bytes. You are paying for software that still lists JPG.
- Drop .avif. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
- Pick a fill if the image had transparency. Download JPEG, or a ZIP of several. Delete when you have the files.
- If the form also names a cap, run Compress to 200 KB on the JPEG. Need the transparency, use AVIF to PNG.
Mac already opens AVIF. The portal often does not
Preview on macOS Ventura and later opens AVIF. Android 12 galleries usually do too. The failure is still Windows, an old editor, and the upload field. Keep AVIF on your own site. Send JPEG when the other person's software is the problem.
If the next file is HEIC from an iPhone, that is a different codec: HEIC on Windows.
Questions
Why won't Windows open my AVIF file?
The codec is missing or incomplete. Convert to JPEG, or install AV1 Video Extension if you only need to look on this PC.
Do I need the AV1 Video Extension?
Only to preview on this Windows. It does not help Word on another PC, and HDR AVIF can still show black.
Chrome saved .avif but the URL said .jpg. Same file?
Yes. The URL is a name. The bytes are what the server sent after Chrome said it accepts image/avif.
Can I just rename it to .jpg?
No. The inside is still AVIF. Word and a lot of portals look at the bytes, not only the extension.
Does the JPEG keep HDR or transparency?
No. HDR becomes 8-bit. Transparency needs a fill you pick. Need the hole in the background, use AVIF to PNG.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each. Download a ZIP when you send more than one.
