Insert HEIC into PowerPoint

Why Insert Pictures refuses an iPhone .heic

PowerPoint on Windows does not ship its own HEIC decoder. It asks Windows Imaging Component for a codec. Without Microsoft's HEIF Image Extensions, and usually HEVC Video Extensions for .heic stills, Insert > Pictures > This Device either hides the file or returns an unsupported format error.

That failure is separate from Explorer thumbnails. Photos can open a .heic after the Store packages while an older Microsoft 365 build, or a Photo Album dialog, still will not list the same file. The deck you are building is the program that has to succeed, not the gallery on the side.

Mac PowerPoint has handled HEIC for years. The Windows path is the one that breaks presentations shared from an iPhone roll into a work laptop.

Install HEIF, then check whether HEVC is required

The free HEIF Image Extension teaches Windows the container. Most .heic stills from an iPhone also need an HEVC decoder for the frame inside. Some PCs offer a free Device Manufacturer HEVC listing; where that is missing, the paid HEVC package is what remains.

Restart PowerPoint after the install. Leaving the app open often keeps the old codec list in memory, so Insert still looks empty even though the Store page says installed.

  1. Install HEIF Image Extension from the Microsoft Store (free).
  2. If Insert still fails on .heic, install HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer, or the paid HEVC listing when the free one is not offered.
  3. Quit PowerPoint completely, reopen the deck, and try Insert > Pictures > This Device again.
  4. Managed PC with no Store? Skip the codecs and convert instead.

Drag-and-drop is not the same as Insert

Dragging a .heic from Explorer onto a slide sometimes pastes a link or a broken picture object even when Insert Pictures works after the codecs land. Prefer Insert > Pictures > This Device so PowerPoint goes through the picture pipeline.

Photo Album is pickier still. Batch HEIC folders often do not appear in that dialog even when single Insert works. Convert the batch to JPEG when you need Album, or insert files one by one only if the count is small.

New Outlook and some Office builds share the same Windows codecs, but a grey box on the slide after a successful Insert usually means the picture was embedded as HEIC and the next machine lacks the decoder. That is a sharing problem, not a slide-layout problem.

A Live Photo is still only one frame in PowerPoint

A Live Photo from the iPhone is a HEIC still plus a short motion clip. PowerPoint takes the still. The motion does not play on the slide, and converting the HEIC does not extract the clip either.

If you needed the motion, export video from Photos on the phone first. For a static slide, treat the Live Photo like any other HEIC still: Insert after codecs, or convert to JPEG before you build the deck.

Convert when Insert fails or the deck must travel

Codecs stay on this Windows install. The laptop in the conference room, the classroom projector PC, and the reviewer who opens the .pptx on another machine may have none of them. Embedding HEIC leaves blank frames for them even when your Insert looked fine.

HEIC to JPG rewrites a standard JPEG with libheif on the server. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each. Files are deleted within 1 hour. For a rare cut-out that must keep a transparent edge on a dark slide, use HEIC to PNG instead.

  1. Drop the .heic batch on HEIC to JPG.
  2. Download the JPEGs, or a ZIP for many slides.
  3. In PowerPoint, Insert > Pictures > This Device and pick the .jpg files.
  4. If the slide needs a transparent logo edge, run that one file through HEIC to PNG instead.

Explorer blank thumbnails are a different job

If the problem is only that File Explorer shows no preview and you are not building a deck, start at HEIC on Windows. That page covers Store packages for browsing and the upload fields that refuse HEIC.

Do I need the paid HEVC extension for PowerPoint?

Many .heic stills need an HEVC decoder as well as free HEIF. Try the free Device Manufacturer listing first. If Insert still fails and that listing is missing, the paid HEVC package is what Microsoft leaves.

Do Word and Excel have the same HEIC problem?

They share the Windows codecs. Insert Picture in Word or Excel can fail on the same .heic until HEIF and HEVC are installed, or until you convert to JPEG.

Does PowerPoint on a Mac insert HEIC without codecs?

Recent Mac PowerPoint builds usually insert HEIC natively. The Windows codec requirement is the one that breaks shared decks from iPhone photos.

Why does drag-and-drop fail when Insert works?

Drag can bypass the picture Insert path and paste a link or a broken object. Use Insert > Pictures > This Device after the codecs are installed, or insert JPEGs you converted.

Will a Live Photo play motion on the slide?

PowerPoint keeps the still frame only. Export video from the phone if you need motion; otherwise convert or Insert the still like any HEIC.

Can I convert a whole folder of HEIC for one deck?

Drop the folder on HEIC to JPG and download a ZIP of JPEGs, then Insert the batch. Photo Album is more reliable with JPEG than with HEIC.

Should I install codecs or convert once?

Install codecs when you only edit on this PC and Store is allowed. Convert when Insert fails, the Store is blocked, or the .pptx must open on machines you do not control.

Why are pictures blank when a colleague opens my deck?

The HEIC was embedded and their Windows lacks the decoder. Re-insert JPEGs from HEIC to JPG so every machine draws the same slide.
