Change iPhone camera to JPEG

In Settings, Camera, Formats, choose Most Compatible to capture new photos as JPEG and video as H.264. High Efficiency uses HEIF and HEVC. Available resolution and RAW options vary by iPhone model and iOS version. Apple camera-format instructions describe this choice.

The row only exists on a phone that can capture HEIC at all. On an iPhone old enough to predate iOS 11 hardware support the camera already writes JPEG, and Formats is simply not in the list.

1. Open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats.
2. Tap Most Compatible. The next shutter press writes a .jpg.
3. Tap High Efficiency to go back. Nothing you shot in between changes.

The toggle only points forward

This is the part that sends people here in the first place. A form rejected IMG_2048.heic, the internet said turn off HEIC, and the toggle went across. IMG_2048.heic is still IMG_2048.heic, the form still rejects it, and nothing in the library moved.

So the setting and the broken upload are two separate jobs. Flip the setting for the next few months if you want to; convert the file that was rejected today either way. For a PC that will not preview it, start at HEIC on Windows. For a phone on the other side, iPhone to Android.

What Most Compatible does not change

Live Photos also include motion. This conversion workflow prepares a still image; it does not export the Live Photo as a video. Keep the original in Photos when you need its motion or editing options.

Apple documents JPEG and H.264 for Most Compatible. The video modes available depend on the device and selected recording settings; check the options shown by your iPhone rather than assuming every mode has the same restriction. ProRAW uses DNG and has its own capture controls.

What it costs on disk

HEIF and HEVC generally use less storage than JPEG and H.264 at comparable visual quality. The difference depends on the scene, resolution and recording settings. There is no fixed two-times ratio; compare a few files from your own device before deciding.

Transfer to Mac or PC is a second switch

Settings, Apps, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC. Automatic converts during a USB import when the computer on the other end wants JPEG. Keep Originals hands over the .heic untouched.

It rewrites nothing in the library and it cannot reach a file you already attached to an email. It changes what the next cable copy produces, and that is all.

1. Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos.
2. Scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC and pick Automatic if the computer should receive JPEG.

Convert the library the toggle left behind

HEIC to JPG produces the main still as JPEG. For a PNG image use HEIC to PNG; it is still one raster image, not an editable layer project. Keep the source if you need Live Photo motion or the original HDR data. If a form also sets a byte cap, inspect a copy prepared with Compress image.

Work from Photos on the phone or from a cable copy of DCIM, whichever is in front of you. Several photos that have to arrive as one document go through iPhone to PDF instead of as a folder of JPEGs.

1. With Formats already set the way you want it, open HEIC to JPG and drop the old .heic files. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
2. Download the JPEG, or a ZIP for several.
3. Check one file in whatever rejected the original before you convert the rest of the roll.

When the toggle earns its place

If the expense-report or document upload you use requires JPEG, capturing JPEG can save a conversion step for future photos. Check that particular field's accepted formats. Other Workday configurations or recipients may accept different files.

Everyone else meets this problem a few times a year. Converting a batch takes a minute, keeps the phone smaller, and keeps 4K video on HEVC. If the other phone in the house is the one that cannot read HEIC, HEIC on Android is the cheaper fix than changing how your camera records.
