Change iPhone camera to JPEG

Most Compatible only changes new photos. The library you already have stays HEIC, and JPEG takes more space. Keep High Efficiency and convert when you send. Files are deleted within 1 hour.

What Most Compatible writes

Settings, Camera, Formats. High Efficiency is HEIC for photos and HEVC for video. Most Compatible is JPEG and H.264. Apple's own steps are in Most Compatible.

The toggle is only on phones that can capture HEIC. Older iPhones without it already write JPEG. You will not see the row.

  1. Open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats.
  2. Tap Most Compatible. New photos write JPEG. New video writes H.264.
  3. To go back, tap High Efficiency.

Existing photos stay HEIC

The roll you already have does not convert. IMG_2048.heic stays IMG_2048.heic. Mail and some share targets may rewrite that one send. USB, Files, and a Drive upload keep the original.

Windows still trips on those files. That job is HEIC on Windows. Sending the batch to an Android phone is iPhone to Android.

JPEG roughly doubles storage

HEIC is the reason a 128 GB phone holds a full year of shots. JPEG of the same picture is often about twice the bytes. You also drop 10-bit color and HDR extras that JPEG cannot hold.

If the phone is already full, flipping the switch makes the next vacation worse. Keep High Efficiency. Convert the files that have to leave.

Transfer to Mac or PC: Automatic

There is a second switch. Settings, Apps, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC. Automatic converts on a USB import when the other computer needs JPEG. Keep Originals hands over the .heic.

Automatic does not rewrite the library on the phone. It does not fix a file you already emailed. It only helps the next cable copy.

  1. Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Photos.
  2. Scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC. Tap Automatic if the PC should get JPEG.

Convert the roll you already have

Drop the .heic files on HEIC to JPG. The server decodes with libheif. You get the main photo as JPEG. The Live Photo clip stays behind. HDR becomes a standard 8-bit JPEG.

Need PNG for an editor, use HEIC to PNG. A form that also names a size can follow with Compress image. GPS on a listing is strip GPS.

  1. Open HEIC to JPG and drop the .heic. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
  2. Download JPEG, or a ZIP of several. Delete when you have the files.
  3. Send those JPEGs. Leave High Efficiency on for new shots.

Questions

Should I turn off HEIC on my iPhone?

Usually no. Keep High Efficiency. Convert the batch that has to leave. Most Compatible is for people who send USB copies every day and will not convert.

Does Most Compatible convert photos I already took?

No. Only new shots. The library stays HEIC until you convert those files.

What is Transfer to Mac or PC, Automatic?

On a USB import, the iPhone can hand the computer a JPEG. The photo on the phone stays HEIC. It does not fix an email you already sent.

Does this also change video?

Yes. Most Compatible writes H.264 instead of HEVC. 4K files get larger. Some cinema modes still need High Efficiency.

Does the JPEG include the Live Photo?

You get the main photo. The clip stays behind.

Do you keep the file?

Original and result are deleted within 1 hour. You can delete them from the download screen.
