Why the chat copy looks worse

You picked the photo from the gallery and hit send, and WhatsApp re-encoded it so the thread stays light on a slow connection. The other person gets a smaller, softer JPEG with a name WhatsApp invented. The app is doing that deliberately, not failing at it.

Your own copy is untouched. Only the one in the conversation is crushed, and that matters the moment somebody needs the file for a printer, an upload field, or a listing rather than for looking at on a phone.

HD is still compressed

HD is a media-upload quality setting. It does not establish that the received file matches the selected original. Check WhatsApp's HD settings. For a file attachment, use Document and inspect the copy you select.

If the person on the other end is going to print, crop, or re-upload the photo, HD is the wrong send. You want either the original bytes or a JPEG you shrank yourself, knowing exactly what you gave up.

Send it as a document

Choose Document in WhatsApp's attachment menu and select the photo file. On an iPhone, save a copy to Files first if needed. WhatsApp publishes a file-sharing limit of 2 GB. Inspect the selected file because an earlier export from Photos may already have changed its format.

The recipient can open or save the document from the conversation. Its preview, automatic download and save location depend on the app version and device settings. Ask them to open the document attachment you sent rather than another copy from their gallery.

1. In the chat, open the attachment menu and pick Document, not Gallery.
2. On iPhone, choose Browse and find the photo in Files. On Android, pick it from the file picker.
3. Send and ask the recipient to open the document attachment in the chat. They can use the available download or save options; the folder depends on their device and settings.

The document send carries the metadata too

Original bytes mean original EXIF. GPS coordinates, camera model, lens and the timestamp all travel with the file, which is fine for family and not fine for a stranger coming to collect a sofa.

Do not rely on chat processing to remove location data. A file attachment may retain the original EXIF, including GPS when it was recorded. Use Remove EXIF on the copy you intend to share; strip GPS explains how to check it.

Compress it yourself if you want the preview

This is also the honest answer for a listing. eBay asks for at least 500 px on the long side, and a chat-compressed photo of a serial number is unreadable long before it gets that small. Compress to a number you chose, at a 500 KB target, rather than letting the encoder pick for you. Sizing for the listing itself is listing photo size.

1. Open Compress image and drop the photo. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
2. Send the download as a photo for the preview, or as a document when the bytes have to match.

An iPhone HEIC in the thread

A gallery send from an iPhone usually arrives as JPEG on the Android side, which is why mixed households think WhatsApp just works. Attach the same .heic as a document and that free conversion does not happen.

So convert with HEIC to JPG before you attach it, or the other phone shows a file it cannot draw. Opening one that already landed there is HEIC on Android, and the other ways off an iPhone are in iPhone to Android.
