How to open WebP on Windows
A .webp that looks fine in Edge can still sit blank in Photos and get rejected by Outlook. Open it with the Store extension or convert it to JPEG on Tinolia. Files are deleted within 1 hour.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not start from the same place
Current Windows 11 installs usually open .webp in Photos and draw a thumbnail in Explorer. Older Windows 10 builds, freshly imaged work laptops, and machines where Store apps were stripped out often do not. The file is not broken; that PC is missing Microsoft's WebP decoder.
Photos and Explorer also use different decode paths, so a double-click can show the picture while the folder tile stays empty. That split is normal. Clearing the thumbnail cache after you install the extension is what fills the tile.
Install the WebP Image Extension when Photos won't open it
The free Store package teaches Windows to decode WebP for Photos, Explorer, and other inbox apps. Restart Explorer afterwards or the stale blank preview stays on screen and looks like the install failed.
A managed laptop that blocks the Store never gets the package. That is the case where converting is faster than filing a ticket with IT.
- Install WebP Image Extension from the Microsoft Store (free).
- Sign out, or restart Explorer, then open the folder again.
- Right-click the .webp, choose Open with, and pick Photos.
- Still blank, or no Store on this PC? Convert instead.
Edge opens the file with nothing to install
Drag the .webp into Edge, Chrome, or Firefox and the picture draws. Browsers shipped a WebP decoder years before Windows Photos did, so a quick look does not need the Store.
Looking is not the same as handing the file to someone else. Edge on your desk does not help the upload field that only lists JPG and PNG.
Paint can open WebP and save a JPG
On an updated Windows 10 or 11 box, Paint opens .webp. File → Save as → JPEG is enough for a single photo you need to email once.
Paint still flattens transparency onto white, and it is a poor tool for a folder of Chrome downloads. Use it for one file; use the converter for a batch.
- Right-click the .webp and open it with Paint.
- Choose File → Save as → JPEG, then pick a folder.
- If the image had a transparent logo, expect a white fill unless you convert with a colour you choose.
Convert when Outlook or a form rejects the upload
Outlook's attachment pane and a lot of HR portals still treat WebP as an unknown type. The error is usually a bare invalid file type, with no list of what would have worked. Behind it is an allowlist written before WebP was common.
WebP to JPG writes a standard JPEG that opens in Word, in Explorer, and in the field that just refused the original. Files are processed over HTTPS and deleted within 1 hour, or immediately from the download screen.
- Drop the .webp. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
- Pick a fill colour if the image had transparency, then download JPEG or a ZIP.
- If the form also names a size cap, follow with a 200 KB target.
If Chrome saved a .webp, that is a different problem
If the download landed as .webp while the URL still ended in .jpg, that is the server answering Chrome's Accept header, not Windows refusing to open a format. Chrome WebP covers that path.
An .avif from the same kind of download needs a different decoder and a different page: AVIF on Windows. Keep this page for files that Windows itself will not preview.

Does Windows 11 Photos open WebP without installing anything?
Most current Windows 11 installs already open .webp in Photos and show Explorer thumbnails. Test with one saved file before you install anything. Older builds and locked-down work PCs may still need the Store extension.
Do I need the WebP Image Extension on Windows 10?
Windows 10 version 1809 and later can open WebP after the free WebP Image Extension is installed. Without it, Photos stays blank and Explorer thumbnails stay empty on many machines.
Can Paint save a WebP as JPG?
Paint on updated Windows 10 and 11 opens WebP and can Save as JPEG. Transparency lands on white, and a folder of files is still faster through WebP to JPG.
Why does Explorer show no thumbnail for my .webp?
Explorer draws thumbnails through a shell provider and caches the empty result per folder. Install the WebP decoder, then restart Explorer or clear the thumbnail cache so the tile can redraw.
Does Edge open WebP without the Store package?
Edge, Chrome, and Firefox already decode WebP. Drag the file into a browser tab to look at it. That does not teach Photos, Explorer, or Outlook to accept the same file.
Does converting WebP to JPG lose transparency?
JPEG has no transparency, so a cut-out logo needs a fill colour you choose. Keep the hole open with WebP to PNG instead.
Is WebP the same as WebM?
WebP is an image format. WebM is a video container. A .webp in Downloads is a still picture, even when a site also ships WebM video next to it.
I have a batch of Chrome WebP downloads. What now?
Drop the whole folder on WebP to JPG and download a ZIP. If those files only exist because Chrome saved a CDN response as .webp, read Chrome WebP so the next right-click makes sense.
