Why photos upload sideways
The phone stored a note for which way is up and left the pixels on their side, so Outlook shows the attachment lying down. Tinolia writes the turn into the pixels, and files are deleted within 1 hour.

The phone wrote a note and left the pixels
A phone camera often saves the sensor's view and adds an orientation note, the EXIF tag, that tells a viewer to turn the picture. The Photos app on the phone obeys the note, so the shot looks upright in your hand.
A browser, an old mail pane, and plenty of upload forms skip the note and draw the pixels as stored. Same file. Two orientations. The phone is not lying, and Outlook is not broken. They are reading different halves of the file.
Outlook and eBay disagree with the phone
Outlook will preview an attachment with the note applied, then the recipient's webmail draws the raw pixels. You send a portrait and they get a landscape with the subject on one ear. Rotating it inside the mail window often fixes that one view and leaves the attachment as it was.
eBay's uploader does the same split. The listing photo looks fine in the phone gallery and lands sideways in the draft, because the draft stored pixels and dropped the note. A turn you make after the listing is live fixes the copy on the site. The original in the camera roll still carries the old note.
Facebook and Instagram have their own crop on top of this. A sideways upload and a square crop are two failures. Fix the turn in the file first, then frame. Doing it backwards crops the wrong edges.
Write the turn into the pixels
On Rotate image the preview already applies the note, so you see the photo the way the phone sees it. If that preview is upright, leave the angle alone and download. The download has the turn baked in, which is what the next site was missing. If the preview is still sideways, the note itself was wrong.
- Drop the photo on Rotate image and look at the preview before you tap a turn.
- Upright preview: download with no extra angle. The pixels are rewritten so a site that ignores the note still shows the photo upright.
- Sideways preview: tap 90 until it matches, then download. Another 90 on an upright preview turns a good file onto its side.
A HEIC file that will not open is a second problem
Windows can refuse the file before anyone argues about rotation. That refusal is HEIC on Windows. A JPEG that opens and then lies down is this page.
Sending the original through WhatsApp original keeps the note in the document copy. The chat preview may look upright while the file the other person saves is still tagged. Bake the pixels if they have to upload that saved copy somewhere else.
The next batch will do it again
The same turn applies to every photo in the batch. Check the second one. A portrait and a landscape from the same roll do not want the same extra 90.
Portrait Orientation Lock on the phone changes how the screen rotates while you shoot. It does not rewrite photos you already took. Those still need the pixels turned once, in the file you are about to upload.

Does Portrait Orientation Lock stop sideways uploads?
Portrait Orientation Lock keeps the phone screen from rotating while you shoot. Photos already in the camera roll keep the note they were saved with. The upload still needs the pixels rewritten.
