PowerPoint cannot insert WebP
Insert Pictures greys out a Canva .webp, or PowerPoint returns an unsupported format on the slide. Tinolia converts that WebP to JPEG when Insert fails, and files are deleted within 1 hour.

Why Insert Pictures refuses a .webp from Canva
Canva and similar design tools often download slides and graphics as WebP. PowerPoint on Windows does not treat WebP like JPEG. Older Office 2016/2019 installs and some Microsoft 365 builds still omit a reliable WebP decoder on the Insert Pictures path.
The file can open in Edge or Photos while Insert Pictures hides it or returns unsupported format. That is an Office Insert failure, not proof that Windows cannot open WebP at all.
Drag-and-drop from Explorer onto a slide has the same weak spot: the graphic may paste broken or as a link while Insert Pictures still refuses the .webp name.
This is not the Explorer or Chrome download problem
If the only issue is opening or previewing .webp in File Explorer, start at WebP on Windows. If Chrome saved a page image as .webp when the URL said .jpg, that story is Chrome WebP.
Stay here when the failure is Insert Pictures, Photo Album, or a .pptx that must carry the graphic on another PC. Converting once for the deck is faster than chasing Store packages that still leave Insert grey.
Older Office and uneven Microsoft 365 builds
Retail Office 2016 and many volume-licensed 2019 boxes never gained solid WebP Insert support. Microsoft 365 updates roll out unevenly: one laptop inserts .webp after a quiet update, the conference-room PC from last year still refuses the same Canva file.
Building the deck on the machine that happens to accept WebP still risks blank frames when a colleague opens the .pptx elsewhere. A JPEG embedded in the slide travels with the file.
Convert the Canva export, then Insert JPEG or PNG
WebP to JPG rewrites a standard JPEG on the server. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each. Files are deleted within 1 hour. Need a transparent logo edge on a dark slide? Use WebP to PNG for that one graphic.
- Drop the .webp Canva export on WebP to JPG.
- Download the JPEG, or a ZIP for a batch of slide assets.
- In PowerPoint, Insert > Pictures > This Device and pick the .jpg files.
- If Outlook or a Workday upload also rejects .webp outside the deck, reuse the same JPEG.
HEIC from an iPhone is a different Insert failure
An iPhone still that fails Insert Pictures is HEIC, not WebP. That path, including Store codecs, is HEIC in PowerPoint. Do not install HEIF hoping it will teach PowerPoint to read Canva WebP.

Why does PowerPoint refuse a WebP I exported from Canva?
Many Office builds still lack a solid WebP decoder on Insert Pictures. Canva often ships .webp; convert to JPEG or PNG before you insert.
Edge opens the WebP. Why does Insert Pictures fail?
