Why is my PNG so large
PNG keeps every pixel. That is why a screenshot from a 4K screen or a photo saved as PNG is huge. Convert or compress the file. Files are deleted within 1 hour.

PNG does not throw pixels away
JPEG throws some color detail to shrink the file. PNG does not. A photograph with millions of similar colors compresses badly as PNG. The same shot as JPEG at a normal quality is often five to ten times smaller.
A logo or a screenshot with flat color and sharp type is the job PNG was built for. That is also why a full-screen capture from a dense desktop stays fat: lots of pixels, and none of them get discarded.
Screenshots are PNG on purpose
Win+Shift+S, Snipping Tool, and the macOS screenshot keys write PNG so the letters stay crisp. A 4K or Retina desktop then stores millions of pixels. Discord, a ticket field, and a lot of email inboxes choke on a 5 MB PNG.
iPhone screenshots are PNG too. They sit in Photos next to camera shots and eat space the same way. The camera photo is usually HEIC or JPEG. The capture of a settings screen is the PNG.
If it is a photo, convert to JPEG
Someone saved a camera photo as PNG, or exported PNG from an editor for quality. There is no transparency to keep. PNG to JPG writes JPEG. If there was a hole in the background, pick a fill; white is the usual page.
Do not send WebP to the same portal that refused the PNG. That portal listed JPG. Chrome Save as is a different mess: Chrome WebP.
If it is UI text, compress the PNG
A settings screen, a spreadsheet, a code editor. JPEG at a low quality puts blocks around letters. Run Compress PNG first. If the field still has a KB cap, shrink the long side in Resize image, then compress again.
JPEG at a high quality is a last resort when the field only lists JPG. You will see a little softness on type. Better that than a bounce.
- Drop the .png. Up to 10 files, 20 MB each.
- Photo with no type: PNG to JPG. Screenshot you must read: Compress PNG.
- If the field also names 200 KB or 500 KB, run that file through the matching compress page. Delete when you have the download.
Discord, email, and the form
Free Discord accounts cap uploads. A 4K PNG misses that cap before anyone reads the ticket. Email is a different fat file: the cap is the whole message. See photos for email.
A 50 KB visa or HR field is smaller still: 50 KB photo. WhatsApp will crush a PNG you send as a photo. Send as a document if you need the original, or shrink first: WhatsApp original.
Questions
Why are my screenshots so large?
They are PNG at the full resolution of the screen. A 4K or Retina desktop makes a multi-megabyte file even when the window looks simple.
Should I convert a screenshot to JPEG?
Only if the field refuses PNG and the text can take a little softness. Keep PNG and compress it when you still need to read the UI.
Why is a PNG photo bigger than the JPEG?
PNG keeps every pixel. Photographs have messy color. JPEG is allowed to throw some of that away, so the file drops a lot.
Can I just change the extension to .jpg?
No. The inside is still PNG. Word and a lot of portals look at the bytes.
Will compressing PNG blur the text?
Compressing the PNG here keeps the letters. Heavy JPEG on a screenshot is what makes type blocky. Start with Compress PNG.
Do you keep the file?
Original and result are deleted within 1 hour. You can delete them from the download screen.
